Weekly Photo Challenge: On Top
This is my sister and brother-in-law on top of Combestone Tor on Dartmoor in Devon. Helen and Kevin are both keen photographers with their own brand, Eros Imageworks. We spent this Easter weekend with them and on a crisp, sunny Saturday we ventured onto the moors to enjoy the stunning landscapes and get some photography in 🙂
Combestone is the most accessible of all the Tors, with a car park right next to the Tor itself and no hills to climb. Perfect for anyone like myself with disabilities! We almost had the Tor completely to ourselves, just a few dog walkers and occasional tourist. There was a brisk wind that had the light clouds scuttling overhead, bringing with them some dramatic light and shadow to this majestic landscape.
Dartmoor is a wild landscape filled with historic tales, myth and mystery. The Tors seem to encapsulate all of that magic within their monolithic presence. With the wind whipping through your hair and unspoilt vistas, stretching out to the horizon in all directions, it feels as if the entire history of Planet Earth is laid bare before you.
What a spectacular place, would love to visit there one day! Beautiful dramatic images!
It is an amazing place Susan! Thank you 🙂 I’d love to visit your part of the world one day too. More beautiful and verdant landscapes!
I feel like I’m being taken back into prehistory.
Thank you 🙂 That’s exactly how it feels on the moors! Especially when there are no other people around. It just feels so vast!
Really, really excellent images here. That sepia image is absolutely killer.
Thanks Shane 🙂 Yeah I really wanted to give the Tor a dramatic feel. As beautiful as it is on a sunny day, it’s the kind of place that needs a stormy weather look! There’s something very foreboding about such a wild landscape.
Amazing! Magnificent shots!
Thanks Amy 🙂 Hopefully I did the moors justice!
Great article and what a great place – Combestone Tor is on the travel agenda for when we are in that part of the UK . The rocks look like a short-stack of American pancakes and the photo of the two trees is calling out – ‘Come and photograph’ to me.
The moors are amazing! Very glad you’re going to put it on your travel agenda 🙂 I’d love to photograph the Tors at sunrise with some mist or fog! Do go down to Dartmeet for a cream tea at Badgers Holt 🙂 There are some fantastic wildlife parks too! Those windswept trees are like candy to a photographer 😉
A strangely beautiful landscape – seemingly empty, yet rich in history.
It does take your breath away! The military have used parts of the moors to train soldiers in survival and orienteering for many years. My mum grew up on the moors and I love her tales of rescuing lost soldiers whilst she was out walking the dog 😉 It’s a wilderness that can’t be tamed!
That’s a great story – rescuing soldiers in survival training situations…
I know 🙂 Growing up there I guess they got to know the landscape pretty well but there are pitfall for the unwary!
