Beautiful photo Sarah, of one of my favourite British birds!!!! π
Thanks Andy π I love them! Garrulous little creatures. I always hear them before I see them. The last few years have seen a big rise in their numbers which is fantastic! Seeing them clustered around wildflowers in a fallow field just shows how important these habitats are!
That’s good to hear about the numbers of goldfinches increasing in Surrey too, I thought it may have been just a local phenomena to Fife π
Countrywide I believe π I do wish we still had the greenfinches! I remember them from childhood as being regular garden visitors. Sadly the chaffinches are still badly affected by the foot disease so I doubt the greenies could make a comeback unless the disease could be dealt with across the finch population here.
it is sad to see the lack of what used to be common birds, the chaffinches and greenfinches π¦ My wife (who isn’t a birder) got all excited the other day by this amazing bird she’d seen on one of our feeders – it turned out to be a chaffinch, the first she had seen. Which gives you an idea of how few chaffinches we have in Fife.
Hopefully your chaffinches are free from disease even if they are few in number!
They appear to be okay, so fingers crossed that they start to increase their numbers again π
Good to hear π
So beautiful!
Thanks Janaline π It was wonderful watching them all in the field, swooping between the wildflowers!
Beautiful …π
Thanks Julie π I was so thrilled to get a shot of a group of them displaying such natural behaviour!
