      • Even more chocolate in the form of cake 😉 I finally managed to read a few of your posts and although I am pretty much strictly a reader of fantasy and science fiction I really want to read your book now! I must tell my friend Rachel about it too. She runs thecareerbreaksite.com and is totally awesome 😀 With your talent for such descriptive writing and character shaping I bet you could write a great fantasy book you know! Maybe something based on East Asian history rather than the typical British and European history that so many fantasy works base their worlds upon?

      • Hiya again Sarah > Wow did I get a great blast of energy off of that. Its strange you saying that. I write travel but am getting more interested in fiction ha ha. My main dream in life is to write fiction > definitely crime/fantasy dark yet with some comic moments. I dont want to be a writer as such but want to write the book I have had in my head for over ten years. Your the first person that has ever nudged me in that direction. In the mean time I am a few chapters into book two of my next travel book. Of course I’d be delighted if you read my mad travel book (and it is mad believe me). Its written in exactly the same style as you get on my blog > moments of introspection and detail about amazing culture and then ridiculous situations slapped next to it. Thank you so much Sarah.

      • My pleasure Andy 😀 I have a book in my head too and every now and then I start trying to get it out. It’s a kind of mix of urban, science fiction and mystery! Time is always my enemy. Oh, and grammar!! Reading is one of my greatest pleasures in life and one of the things that brought my hubby and I together 😀 He’s rereading the Shannara books by Terry Brooks at the moment as we started watching the TV adaptation. Although Terry was closely involved with it it’s most definitely an adaptation!! I do so wish they’d just tell the classic stories as they were. Tom Holt is ingenious for bringing humour to the fantasy genre! Michael Marshall Smith has written some amazing books that cross genres of science fiction, fantasy, crime, horror and supernatural. Character is key 🙂 I think your style is incredibly engaging which is exactly what a writer needs to be able to do!

      • Cheers for that Sarah. Hope you get your book out and onto paper. I’ve always been worried about overlapping too many genres in case it weakens the target audience. What do you think about multiple genres > I mean more than three?????

      • I don’t see a problem with crossing genres. I think it’s like cooking, like your two main ingredients set the tone and everything else is supporting the dish. Add in a bit of spice or a side, whatever! It’s like most forms of art, you usually need a focus and the rest needs to balance. Just know your ingredients really well!! That’s one of my sticking points. I need to get the factual science right and balanced with theoretical physics and ancient mythology 😀 Lots of research!

      • Thats so nicely put Sarah > I was only asking as I think my idea crosses a lot of genres also. I like the cooking analogy particularly. You make me want to write ha ha. Your research sounds like a journey in itself 🙂

      • Seemed a good way to describe it 🙂 Visualisation often helps me work through ideas and concepts. Yeah, my book journey needs a good kick-start again! Have been thinking about trying out some voice recognition software. I find typing lengthy pieces quite difficult as my dexterity is pants! The research should be great as long as some of it doesn’t completely blow my mind, quantum physics is intriguing but the concepts can aquire a life of their own! One of my research “wants” is to visit a number of sacred places devoted to cats 🙂 There are lots! Some are truly ancient but others have only come into being over the last few centuries. I don’t know much about cats and ancient eastern customs and mythology. It’s very much a Eurasian and South American thing.

        Question, will I lose out on photos etc if I get your book for kindle? We pretty much ran out of real book room rather a long while ago now and if I bring a real book home I get “the look” from my poor hubby who desperately tries to manage my clutter!

      • I thought about voice recognition software myself but after looking at the reviews on Amazon I dropped it. It looked like a hit and miss thing with installing it and then teaching it to know your voice.

        Cats > The Egyptians were well into cats weren’t they? Love cats 🙂

        Quantum physics. Hmmm > My want is to do research on other dimensions or alternate realities and time travel. Aren’t there links between the two?

        RE My book. The only thing near pictures are a couple of maps at the beginning I’m afraid so Kindle or paperback are pretty much the same though I much prefer to put footnotes rather than endnotes, something you have no choice with if you do an ebook. Anyway, delighted in your interest and happy to reciprocate. I always write reviews for any book I read 🙂

        Have you ever looked at Goodreads? Highly recommended for any author. You just have to mentally prepare yourself for creating yet another profile page AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!ha ha

      • Pahahahaha, I still can’t get my head around the profiles I already have!! My biog is horribly wordy and poetic but I freak out at the mere thought of rewriting it 😉 I keep promising folks that I will eventually publish collections of my poetry. I delay myself by saying that the words can not go forward without the art! I often find new books to read from favourite authors tips on Goodreads 🙂 I presume you have read Stephen Baxter and his collaboration with Sir Terry? In my book I hope that readers will constantly question whether it’s actually set in an alternate reality 🙂 Terry Brooks Word and The Void really did that for me.

        Yes, I know all the flaws associated with voice recognition 😦 Typing here on my smartphone with my middle finger, hardly having to move my hand is not too bad but my dexterity is pants when it comes to a keyboard or even pen and paper these days. Don’t think I could afford a secretary 😉 Cats appear in myth and history across the world but, yes, the Egyptians were definitely well into them! Bastet and Sekmet were Egyptian Cat gods 🙂 Heinlein (another awesome author) included cats in most of his books. A famous quote of his is “Never try to out stare a cat!”. He’s right too, it’s bad manners in the cat world!

        I shall be downloading the kindle version of Just Turn Left then 🙂 I know what you mean about footnotes! Sir Terry was legendary for them but clicking a link to reach them on an e-book just ruined the format for me. I have to say though that I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed reading Bernard Cornwells endnotes as he’s a truly great historians. They work like a bonus book 🙂

      • Honestly Sarah I havent read that much. Maybe over the years more than I realise. I am trying to read one book a month. I like the work of Julie Ann Peters. Its like you are in the body of the main character. Its like you are feeling someone elses life. I will definitely check out the authors you mentioned. How come I cant find you on Goodreads then?????Let me know how you get on with JTL 🙂

      • I love being drawn right into the protagonists character 🙂 I read more than most I expect as I don’t sleep well! It’s my goto method of shutting everything else out of my brain! I also think it keeps my brain active in the right ways 😉 Use it or lose it, you know? Not signed up on Goodreads, just a visitor to some writers pages. I suppose I should consider it if I really want to publish these poems at some juncture!
