  1. Such a delicate, heavely scented flower. Lily of the valley takes me back to my childhood. My grandparents met on 1st May, traditionally the day when lovers exchange a sprig of this heady flower. After years of celebrating their love, they had a whole garden of lilies. Thank you Sarah for this little bit of reminiscing. Your images are beautiful.

    • Thanks Chris, I’m so happy to bring you those memories 🙂 That’s such a lovely story too! It was always one of my own grandmothers (Nainie) favourite scents and I get rather wistful when I see and smell them. Every year at Wisley Gardens there are carpets of them under the trees and around the rhododendrons on Battleston Hill. It’s a heady mix and something I look forward to every spring 😀

  2. it has been a while since I saw lily-of-the-valley. I even grew some once upon a time. Such a wonderful fragrance that takes me back to childhood. And such a lovely soft photo Sarah.

    • Seeing and smelling them every year takes me back to childhood too! They are planted all over Battleston Hill at Wisley so they start to come up alongside the bluebells, bleeding hearts and solomon’s seals amongst the azaleas and rhododendrons 🙂 There’s loads around the Doric Temple and it’s such a joy to sit there and breathe in the beauty! They make me feel all soft and wistful hence the processing 😉 Thanks Jude and glad this has evoked fond memories for you too!

  3. I had no idea what type of flower this was, nor of it’s smell. I just knew I liked this image the moment I saw it!

      • I’ll try our local nursery. But they really only have plants that do well in our desert climate. I have a feeling it would be too harsh and hot for a Lily.

      • Alternatively, try a perfume shop or scented soaps and candles!! It’s a popular choice for toiletries in Europe and especially the UK and France. I used to have a scented draw liner from Liberties London that was Lily of the Valley 😀
