Making A Splash

This young swan still has a few of his adolescent plumage left and was making a real splash, preening in the River Wey, as the new adult feathers come through. What a joy to watch him! I loved this pose he struck and decided that he should be my star for Wex Mondays this week.

Newark Priory

Travel Theme: Ancient

For those of you who followed me last year on my 365 photographic journey, you may recognise this image. It was my page header for the year. To my new followers, welcome and thank you for your interest in my work!

I took this photo in the winter of 2012 when we had a fantastic hoar-frost that transformed the landscape into a crystalline wonderland! This winter has been devastatingly wet and much of the land around the ruins and along the River Wey at Papercourt has been badly flooded. The road still remains closed!

The ruins are that of Newark Priory which stands as a monument to the Dissolution under Henry VIII, when the crown seized the land and property of the catholic church and destroyed many of the buildings.

Newark actually stands on private farmland, despite its listed status, and can’t be accessed by the public. This is about as close as I can get to these historic remains, on the road between Pyrford and Ripley. I really wish I could explore more of this ancient site!

Floodland

Floodland

This is a part of Papercourt Meadows, an important wetland, wildlife reserve. It’s not usually this wet though!

I’ve previously shared a number of photographs, particularly sunsets, from the pathway that runs alongside the River Wey, through the centre of the meadowland.

Today’s photo is taken from about a quarter of a mile south of the river, the closest I could get! Boxing Day walkers were certainly in for a soggy surprise today.

The South of England was hit hard by strong winds and heavy rains on Christmas Eve. Although there was a lull today the storms are due to return tomorrow!

Upon Reflection

Upon Reflection

This is beautiful Papercourt Lock. I’ve taken sunset photographs here many times over the years.

The view from the little road bridge, looking down the River Wey, toward the marsh and meadow land always warms my heart.

It’s nice to return, reflect and re-photograph places that hold meaning and memories. For me, I find such serenity in places like Papercourt, despite the nearby traffic.
